Almost all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces have resources available to them after they are released from custody. However, the details of these resources are commonly misunderstood or outdated. Incarcerated Veterans who are familiar with up-to-date information may reap the benefits of a smoother transition into their home communities following their release. This guidebook provides specific details in areas including preparation for release, community resources, federal benefits, California state benefits, and Veterans Affairs resources. Additionally, it includes direct mailing addresses for Veteran’s Affairs healthcare enrollment agencies, phone numbers for legal advice, and eligibility breakdowns for VA specific benefits. This Guidebook will be most useful for currently and formerly incarcerated veterans, but may also be helpful for individuals or organizations working inside of correctional facilities, as well as re-entry organizations that serve California Veterans.
